does using a drill for a rock tumbler really work

Sprucing rocks and other items to a perfect polish is a breeze with a rock tumbler. It’s composed of a steel cylinder encased with rubber and anchored by an electric motor which powers a rotating shaft. The cylinder contains the stones to be shined, plus water and gritty material like silicon carbide and aluminum oxide. As the cylinder rotates, abrasion from the grit wears away rough edges until the pieces are buffed to perfection.

The rock tumbler is a powerful piece of machinery, which uses its rotating cylinder and abrasive grit to transform stones into polished pieces. As the cylinder rotates, it gently rubs away the edges of the rocks inside, with the water slowly washing away the dust that is created. This method can be used to craft rocks of any size and shape into smooth polished items.

Powering a rock tumbler with a drill could be considered an old concept, seeing as it has been in use since the 1800s. Initially, the concept was met with doubt and mistrust, but over time it earned recognition. It re-emerged during the early 1900s and once more in the mid-20th century before being embraced by the public.

Compared to purchasing a professional rock tumbler, which can be exorbitantly priced at hundreds of dollars, constructing a drill-powered tumbler is an economical solution that requires an investment of under fifty dollars.

When transforming stones into gems, using a drill instead of a commercial tumbler offers the benefit of being more hushed. An explanation for this is that since commercial tumblers are made larger to contain their significant powerhouses, they produce more resonance in the air. Contrarily, a drill is able to keep the volume to a softer acuteness.

While a drill may achieve the same end result as a commercial tumbler in terms of powering a rock tumbler, its main drawback lies in its relative slowness. This is because the motors of commercial tumblers are much sturdier and can spin the cylinder at a much higher velocity.

With the willingness to wait a little longer, those who prefer not to spend too much money but still enjoy a polished rock can find a great solution in a drill-powered rock tumbler. The plus side? It doesn’t get any quieter than this.
