Making a hole in a river rock isn’t anything new. For centuries, people have deployed various techniques to craft openings in those hard surfaces, whether it be by hand or with a mechanized drill bit, producing openings varying in shape and size. Throughout this time-honored practice, the critical part is to take things slowly and cautiously to ensure accuracy when punching through.
Piercing breaches into river rocks used for decorative landscaping has multiple advantages. Missing links in the pebbles below the soil layer allow water to disperse, thereby safeguarding plant roots from becoming oversaturated. Additionally, aeration of the soil is also supported, benefitting the growth of foliage.
River rocks can be pierced with holes to enable various purposes. In many cases, these holes are created to permit the passage of wires or piping – containing electricity or allowing for the installation of an irrigation system – or for cable television or telephone lines.
River rocks transformed with the addition of drilled holes can be of decorative use. The rocks can be drilled to form openings and then filled with vivid-hued sand or gravel for a delightful and captivating design. This approach is frequently used to construct garden stepping stones or dress up planters and other garden decor.
Assembling river rocks with a few carefully-drilled holes can be quite the laborious process. While a power drill certainly allows the task to be completed faster, it is important to use caution and patience to avoid damaging or splitting the rock – too much heat created by a high-powered drill can cause irreversible damage. Taking your time is key when tackling this tricky job.
Small holes within river rocks? It can be done! You won’t need to invest in a power drill or a professional to do so – just a hand drill and your determination are necessary. Of course, if you have an ambitious project that requires the drilling of many such holes, it would be wise to select a more suitable tool.
