Drill, derived from “drillare” in Latin, has become an oft-used phrase referring to the tool used to make a hole in a dense material. This so-called hand drill typically contains a handle and bit, where the latter serves as the object that pierces through more solid material. Even though it is relatively simple, it effectively performs its duty using a material that is tougher than the object being drilled.
Harkening back to a prehistoric epoch, the notion of the drill hole was born with its inception featuring a simple yet ingenious hand-crafted tool. Human ingenuity had fashioned a sharp rock or bone, with the facility to carve holes within wooden surfaces and softer stone surfaces. To document this concept, history points to the Old Kingdom of Egypt where a carved stone drill was used to make an aperture within a tomb so that a rope could be threaded through.
One could hardly recognize today’s drills compared to their humble beginnings; now, they play an enormous role in a host of applications. Form creating holes for anchoring points in concrete foundations to uncovering oil and gas reserves and even blasting through mining operations, drills have become an irreplaceable tool for modern industry.
Choosing the ideal drill bit is essential when creating a hole in a material. It should be capable of withstanding the heat generated by the drilling process and must fit the size prerequisites. Carbide drill bits are a preferred solution for drilling through steel due to their elevated heat resistance compared to other materials.
To begin the process of creating a larger-sized hole, it is essential to start with the much smaller pilot hole. This serves as a preliminary marker, guiding the drill bit so that it smoothly navigates it way through the material to form a straight opening. After the pilot hole has been properly created, only then can the actual drilling take place.
The rotation velocity of the drill bit is dependent upon the type of material it is penetrating. When it comes to softer substances like wood, a slower motionvshould be utilized so that the bit does not become too hot and produce a spark. On the other hand, when drilling harder surfaces such as metal, a higher speed is usually adopted so that the drill bit doesn’t dull very fast.
When the drill bit has reached its intended penetration, it is withdrawn from the borehole and the excavation is finished.
