For centuries, miners have been tasked with breaking through solid rock. In the early days, this was a laborious process of manual digging and explosions. Over the years, however, technology has advanced significantly – today, the same feat is accomplished with the help of large, powerful drills that can easily penetrate even the most stubborn of surfaces.
Initially, to break through hard rock, a pilot hole must be formed. A small passage carved into the rock serves as a navigational guide, allowing the drill bit to remain on its correct trajectory and avoid unintended detours.
After the initial pilot hole has been bored into the surface, the process continues with drilling a much wider opening – the main hole. This wider tunnel is designed to accommodate the explosives which, on account of their size, dictate the diameter of this gap.
The following step after drilling the primary hole is to fill it with explosives. Taking into account the size of the hole and the degree of rock fragmentation required, these explosives must be meticulously placed at its base. Depending on the circumstances, this might necessitate different quantities of explosives.
After we had secured the explosives, our next move was to link up with the detonator. This is a necessity to trigger the blast and cause an explosion to ensue.
Once the detonator has been set, it’s time to move away. The blast breaks through the ground, generating a considerable cavity.
After punching through the surfaces, miners must diligently clear away the scrap in order to find the coveted treasure underneath. By removing the rubble, they enable themselves to gain access to the precious resources they are intent on excavating.
Drilling through hard rock is an essential stage of the mining process – a step without which companies would be unable to access the minerals essential for their operations.
