Although it may appear to be a straightforward task, drilling into rock is anything but easy. Depending on the type of stone, diverse drilling methods must be employed, involving differing drills and speeds of rotation. On top of that, the pressure exerted and type of lubricant necessary may also depend on the kind of rock.
Sediments, tiny fragments, have the ability to attach to one another and eventually make up an entire rock. The most frequent case of this is the appearance of limestone, a sedimentary rock. This relatively soft material is conveniently manageable with conventional handheld drills.
Heated lava and magma, when cooled, become the ever-familiar igneous rock. Among the best known of these is granite – an incredibly strong substance that needs a drill bit that is diamond-tipped and has substantial power to penetrate it.
Metamorphic rock takes forms previously held as something else; heat and pressure cause the transformation. One of the most recognizable by-products of such a change is marble, which is strong enough to require diamonds for a bit to be able to drill holes through it.
No matter what kind of hard surface one is tackling, these fundamental instructions must be adhered to for a successful hole. First and foremost, the drill bit must be properly lubricated with either oil or water. After that, it must be set in the appropriate angle in regard to the rock. Additionally, it should be spun at the right speed and have the proper amount of pressure placed upon it for a strong cut. Lastly, after the drilling is done, the hole must be cleaned out thoroughly.
If you abide by these fundamental rules, it should be easy to break any form of rock through drilling.
