For the climber, drilling rocks for holds can come down to a few different methods – which can change depending on what type of rock and size of hold is desired. If mini-holds are in order, begin by starting a pilot hole with a hammer and chisel, and finalize with a power drill and masonry bit. On the other hand, if the job calls for larger holds, then it’s best to get started directly with a power drill and carbide-tipped masonry bit.
In order to find the right place on the rock face, take some time to explore and decide upon a spot that fits your purpose. Once you’ve settled on a good location, use a hammer and chisel to chip away at the rock and create a pilot hole. Now, if you’re using an electric drill, start with a small bit and keep widening it until you reach the size of the hole you set out for.
Eye protection and a dust mask are essential when drilling to keep the inhalation of rock dust at bay. In order to prevent the drill bit from heating up, don’t forget to lubricate it with water. Holes of deeper depths can be achieved with a longer drill bit or by breaking down the job into multiple drilling angles.
After the proper hole has been punched, you will want to tidy up and clean the area with either a manually-operated chisel or powered drill. This ensures safe and enjoyable climbing without any of the potential risks of facing an abrupt edge. And that’s it – you’re all set and can begin your ascent!
