When it comes to penetrating rock, one of the most widely used methods is a rotary drill, featuring a rapidly spinning bit that allows it to weave its way through many different kinds of rocks. Such drills can be utilized for multiple tasks like constructing water wells, gas wells, or oil wells.

To get started with a rotary drill, kick it off by drilling a tiny pilot hole. This preliminary furrow is dug into the rock to set up the insertion of a larger drill bit, and will often be pierced with a size more diminutive than the final bit to be used.

After the pilot hole has been formed, the following stage demands for a larger drill bit to be slipped into place. To allow efficient movement through the rock, this drill bit requires regular lubrication with water or drilling fluid to also pause overheating.

As the drill bit slices through the tough stone, a gap emerges wider than the drill itself; this hollow gap is referred to as the borehole, and continues expanding as more rock is chiselled away.
