In 1876, James Gill concepted and created a gill rock drill – offering a portable drilling solution ideal for small tasks like attaching anchor bolts and pipe supports. This mini mechanism has since remained the de facto device when a lightweight, moveable drill is needed.

A gill rock drill is a relatively basic contraption that has been designed with a few essential components. A drill bit and chuck to keep it in place, as well as a handle to get the job done. What completes this simple process is the combination of jaws that clampingly grasp the bit, which is controlled by a lever located on its side.

To begin the drilling process with the gill rock drill, the user needs to insert the drill bit in between the opened jaws of the chuck. Afterward, pulling back on the trigger found on the handle will bring the drill to life via a ratchet mechanism connected to it. The intensity of the trigger squeeze will dictate how quickly the drill operates, allowing for full control over speed.
