Early European settlers in North America found themselves having to rely on rivers for guidance while much of the land remained unknown. As the population increased and further exploration took place, people began to consider alternate methods of transport that would allow them to traverse the country efficiently. Consequently, roads were constructed; these could however only be used in certain locations due to the difficulty of the terrain. As a result, further options were sought as a means of getting around.

Digging through mountains was the ultimate solution for getting from one place to another, despite its daunting nature and the perils involved. Yet, it remained one of the only feasible ways.

While the early 1800s saw many accomplishments, one man took on a unique task – David Stewart, a miner of sorts, decided to brave the jutting Appalachian Mountains, drilling tunnels throughout North Carolina. Commencing with a solitary hole near Boone, he soon crafted a labyrinthine system of passages linking the towns across the state.

Stewart earned himself the title of “Carpenter of Castle Rock” for fearlessly tunneling his way through the Hieroglyphic. The Hieroglyphic, known by its strange symbols etched onto the rock, is something of an enigma with theories alluding to a secret code from long ago or simply a natural result of erosion. Whichever point of view one decides to take, one thing is certain- Stewart was brave enough to carve his own path through it.

No matter what lies beneath the surface, the Hier Drilling Castle Rock towers as a testament to the tenacious ingenuity of humanity. Its existence is a lasting reminder of the sheer range of solutions our species has devised to face down nature’s challenges.
