Certain rocks are simply too difficult to penetrate with the naked force of your hand. The coarseness and rigidity of a rock will determine the kind of drill bit you want for the job. Take sandstone, for instance. With its softer surface qualities, you can easily carve into it using an ordinary masonry bit. But when it comes to rocks of a firmer make-up such as granite, you will require the use of a carbide-tipped bit designed to withstand greater abrasive pressure.
Without a power drill, you can still create a pilot hole with a few tools at your disposal. Begin by employing a chisel to produce an indented area in the rock. Subsequently, take up the hammer and employ it to strike the chisel multiple times, enabling it to sink deeper. Depending on the size of your drill bit, this may require using chisels of diversified sizes to form a suitable hole.
Taking your pilot hole and going further, it’s now time to move forward with drilling. If you’re using a power tool, start out gradatedly, slow and steady. Apply a manageable pressure to the drill bit and let it carry on with the task – if it begins to warm up, pause to allow it some time to cool down before continuing.
As you bore deeper into the rock, the grit from your activity will begin to gather, creating a layer of debris. To prevent your drill bit from overheating, occasionally remove the cutter and use a brush to sweep away the gathered dust.
When you’re done piercing through the rock, make sure you extract the drill bit and rid of any preserved specks of dust.
