How to use a rock tools drill

Rock drills, sometimes called percussive or hammer drills, are machines used to puncture holes into rocks. Invented in the 19th century and powered by steam, these tools have now evolved to be powered by electricity and compressed air.

Centered at the heart of a rock drill is the bit – where the whole operation begins, as it is the part that interacts with the rock and produces a hole. A chuck then fastens onto the bit, making sure that it remains fitted in place. The driver next takes hold of the bit, providing it with the necessary motive force. And lastly, the power source works to support the driver, keeping everything running smoothly.

The rock-drilling process relies on two distinct styles of drilling – impact and rotary. The former pushes a hammer forcefully against the material, while the latter rotates a drill bit to cut into the rock. Regardless of technique, both methods necessitate the use of a chuck to securely hold the drill bit.

When tackling rock-related tasks, there are various drill bits available to assist with the job. The most common, and perhaps indispensable, bit is the carbide-tipped one, specially crafted for penetrating through tough surfaces.

For successful rock drilling, selecting a suitable drill bit for the intended purpose is a must. Following that, the chosen bit should be attached firmly to the chuck. Now it’s time to place the bit against the stony surface that needs to be drilled. Finally, with the power of the drill turned ‘on’, begin drilling.

When you’re done with the painstaking job of drilling, cut off the electricity to the apparatus and take out the drill bit from the grip.
