A rock drill of the pusher leg type is used to create holes in rock formations for a number of applications, such as extraction of resources during mining, searching for oil and gas, or construction projects. In the early 1900s, Swedish engineer Oscar Kjellberg created the pusher leg rock drill, an innovation that would revolutionise the mining industry. As opposed to earlier designs that relied on weights to force the drill bit into rocks, Kjellberg’s design employed a piston to control the pressure. This advanced approach earned him a patent in 1906.
In the early 20th century, the mining industry found a fantastic new drill – the pusher leg rock drill. It efficiently bored holes in mere minutes, making it much speedier than any existing drill. What was more, this extraordinary piece of machinery could be used not only for mining purposes but also to penetrate the tough rock of the Earth’s crust and access reserves of oil and gas.
