A rock core drill is designed to bore through solid rock and create a cylindrical tunnel. Applications of such tools include taking rock samples, placing anchors, and clearing a pathway for explosives. Additionally, they are relied upon when drilling wells for the oil and gas industries.

In the early 1800s, an English miner named Henry De La Rue revolutionized the industry with his revolutionary rock core drill. With this ground-breaking invention, it was now possible to obtain samples from hard rock materials without having to shatter them. Without a doubt, De La Rue truly changed the way mining operations were handled.

A pioneering drilling instrument, the original rock core drill was hand-cranked by a handle. Crafted from steel and furnished with a diamond-tipped bit, this daring device could pierce through rocks of tremendous thickness – up to an impressive four feet.

As compared to the past, today’s rock core drills are so much more robust and effective. Usually equipped with hydraulic motors or efficient gasoline engines, they have immense power surging through them. Furthermore, the drill bits employed are crafted from substances such as tungsten carbide or even diamond, truly pushing limits on strength.

Rock core drills don’t have a universal reality – they are capable of producing holes anywhere from minuscule to extraordinary. For example, when paired with the right drill bit, they can create subterranean cavities that reach a whopping 12 inches in diameter. Vastly different from its shallow depth-accomplishing siblings, these specialized burrows can stretch impossibly deep, depending on the type of drill bit employed.

To create a hole with a rock core drill, there are two essential steps to follow. First, the drill bit needs to be placed into the pre-drilled hole in the rock. Then, turning on the drill, it should be gradually submerged until totally within the stone.

Turning the drill bit, it chisels through the stone. Offing the bit’s activity, the drill is pulled up from the hole, and the chunk of stone that was cut by the bit is subsequently displaced from its nest.

Quite measured and methodical, rock core drilling is an undeniable asset for those patches of land that cannot be accessed via rotary drilling. Proficient at not only drilling but extracting samples efficiently, this slow operation is highly reliable.

Boring into solid rock can be achieved with a safer, greener approach, in the form of core drilling. This technique doesn’t produce any toxic smoke or pollutants, meaning it is both healthy and eco-friendly.
