In 1876, Jacob Epstein stumbled upon a life-altering discovery whilst labouring as a stonecutter in London- the rock drill. He quickly realised the difference this tool could make, with its powerful drill bit effortlessly slicing through rocks. The rock drill alleviated his workload and made his task a breeze.
Amazed at the rock drill, Epstein chose to establish an enterprise to craft and retail the device. Eventually gaining notoriety as the “Drill King”, his business prospered.
The versatile Epstein rock drills earned a sought-after place in the arsenals of anyone working with rock and stone, from miners to stonecutters to tunnelers. Becoming indispensable in a flash, these tools proved their worth time and again.
As his rock drill proved to be a great success, Epstein quickly found wealth. In appreciation, he used this abundance to fund the arts, with one of his greatest contributions being his impactful patronage of the British Museum.
Epstein’s rock drill stands as a powerful symbol of his engineering prowess and business savvy, revolutionizing how we interact with stones and reshaping the landscape of labor.
