A rock drill has the capability of puncturing holes into rocks using a drill bit. The drill bit is a rod, made of steel, which is thin and narrow with an aptly sharpened tip. It is attached to the drill via a cable that is also comprised of steel. Switching the drill on causes the bit to spin rapidly and commence grinding a portion of the rock. The pulverised dust from the rock is ejected out of the hole by way of the steel cable. The process is repeated as the drill bit is gradually lowered deeper, incrementally enlarging the hole.

Initially devised in the early 1800s, the rock drill was applied to boring holes for explosives within mining and quarrying operations. As time progressed, its purpose was expanded to encompass drilling for water and oil wells. Currently, rock drills are a regularly used tool in both mining and construction – functioning to create anchors, pipes and cables as well as dynamite slots in quarrying and mining sites.

A rock drill is an immensely powerful tool, allowing a professional to blast through rock in a relatively short period of time; however, this seemingly miraculous process carries its own inherent dangers. Not only can the drill bit become brittle, thereby increasing the risk of cracking and breaking, but there is potential for rocks and dust particles to fill the air and become ensnared in one’s lungs. As such, it is essential that anyone handling this machinery does so with extreme care.
